First Time
By Ruby Rodriguez
we kiss
on the tamarindo tree,
shaking and anxious
our elbows in
awkward angles
the leaves fly
in our faces
and into our mouths
if we’re not careful
summer spider
knitting a web
above our heads:
a sticky mistletoe,
tender flowers raining
over us
our knees stuck to our
chests dead still
to avoid the wasps
we see deep wells
in each other’s eyes
i wonder how many
sequoias can fit inside
i wonder if life exists
for moments like these.
