Sour

By: Jay Sutton

Words roll off your pomegranate lips

But I’m not listening.

The sound of your speech

Sends grapefruit chills through my body.

The lullaby notes that fly into the air

Make me drunk from your honey.

Sweet and sour.

I don’t need you.

All you’ll do

Is feed me bleached sugar

Then drag your acid across my tongue

And leave me bleeding

Until all I am

Is a sour-faced orange.

Your body will become a tempting apple

While your heart will stay a lemon.

You’ll drag me under with your citrus scent

And leave my lips puckered.
