Maya Trest, Who is Ready to Smile?.
Kris doodles drawings in the corner of his math worksheet, showing no interest in figuring out how much money Jerry had to pay for a hundred thousand apples. He draws a few stars here and there, a flying saucer, an ugly disfigured sketch of his math teacher Mr. Walton, his forehead overly enlarged with big buck teeth and thick oversized glasses. Then his favorite drawing of all; a human build for the most part, except for the yellow skinned suit, and white ruffles that went around his neck and wrists, along with his enormous red sneakers and flower petals that grew out of his face. It was a character from his favorite show, Mr Smiles the clown. He was just missing a few small details. Kris drew on a wide, cheeky smile, two circular dotted eyes and his obnoxiously red nose. His drawing was complete.
I think I will just…. doze off now. He thought, content with the work he did today. He slowly closed his eyes, about to fall asleep at his desk. “Whoahh, look! What is that? A bird?” He jolted up, startled by the sudden noise. “Class. This isn’t the time to goof off! Everyone sit back down right this instant!” His teacher exclaimed. Kris looks to see his classmates swarming around the window, all of them interested in what was outside. He gets up from his seat and walks up to the small crowd, and manages to squeeze through to the window. That’s when he sees it.
“There is no way, is that?” A tall, floating, yellow figure is headed towards him, and fast. “What in the heck are you kids looking at- Argh! Get away from the window!” Everyone scattered, quickly moving away, except for Kris. He stands there frozen for a moment, fixated on the moving figure. Mr. Walton hollers, “You idiot! Get away from there!¨ Kris ducks at the last second, bracing himself. The glass shatters, flying everywhere. He hears a loud screeching of sneakers gliding against the floors, then a roar of a playful trumpet followed by a familiar voice,”Hello there kids! Who is ready to SMILE?” Kris looks up, it really is him. Mr. Smiles is standing right before him, in all his cheerful glory. He always made comic book strips of him and Mr. Smiles meeting and what would happen, but never did he ever imagine it to be in the middle of his math class.
“Look at you all! Those expressions are priceless! Surprised to see your FAVORITE dancing clown?”
“MY WINDOW!” Mr. Walton’s eyebrows furrowed with rage. “Hm? Why the long face pal? You should turn that frown upside down! Hah!” Mr. Smiles chuckles in amusement, not seeing the obvious problem. “I’m calling the authorities! This is fucking outrageous, I don’t get paid enough to deal with this-”
Mr. Walton takes out his phone and dials a number, “Hello? Yes, I have a problem. I was in the middle of a very important lesson when this lunatic-” Mr. Smiles elongates his arm, as if they are stretchy chewing gum, and yanks Mr. Walton’s phone from his hand. “Hey! Give that back!”
Mr. Smiles throws his phone out the unglazed window. He lets out a big sigh, as he waves his arms in a wobbly motion. “Your class sure does have a lot of wiggle room, unlike that small box they keep me in!” He laughs, with a small hint of bitterness in his tone. Kris’ classmates swarm around him fascinated by his abnormally stretchy arms. They speak atop one another, jumping up and toppling over each other to reach his arms. Amused by this, Mr. Smiles entertains them, stretching his arms out further, crashing into desks and chairs. “My room! Agk! I had those desks arranged alphabetically!” Mr. Walton runs around the room frantically, attempting to clean up the destruction as the noodle arms rammed into more objects.
Kris walks up to Mr. Smiles from behind and tugs on his sleeve, “Hey, uhm, are you real?” Mr. Smiles rotates his head all the way around to look at him.
“You tell me! Hah! You’re funny kid… Say, what is your name?” Mr. Smiles tilts his head in curiosity. Kris fumbles on his words, “Wow, this is really weird… I’m Kris and I am a huge fan of your show, I-I can’t believe that I was drawing you and now you are… your.. your here!” Mr. Smiles rotates his torso, now fully facing him and retracts both his arms. He holds out a hand to Kris, and smiles wider, wrinkles creasing under his eyes.
“Kris! How wonderfully, wonderful to meet you friend!” Kris is hesitant, as he reaches for his hand. Bzzzzt! He feels a small sting. Mr. Smiles chuckles, “Works every time! Whoever invented hand buzzers are absolute genius.” Mr. Walton stomps towards Mr. Smiles, “What makes you think that you can come in here unannounced and ruin my classroom! I swear when the police come you will be locked up behind bars! You don’t understand how hard it is to put up with these annoying kids all day. I don’t get paid enough to deal with them and I certainly do not get paid enough to deal with-” Mr. Smiles opens his mouth real wide, his sharp teeth caving over Mr. Waltons head. He chomps down. His cheeks wobble as he takes each bite, and his eyes squint in delight as he savors his meal. “Mmrph! Mmmph!” The students are too stunned. No one makes a sound, not a course of action is made as their teacher slowly gets consumed by a human eating flower. Mr. Smiles takes a final gulp, then regurgitates his clothes and grimaces at the taste.
“AURHEM! ACK OUgh- that was a doozy ha ha! lesson learned kids! Always prepare your food before eating. Haha!” The class is silent for a moment, distracted by the teacher’s wet clothes that lay on the floor. A slow clap is heard. Everyone’s attention is turns to Kris. “Yes yes yes! I don’t have to do math homework anymore!” He was ecstatic. The clapping and cheering spreads to the other students. A blaring of sirens are heard from outside. Mr. Smiles eyebrows rise up in alert, he looks at his imaginary wrist watch. “Well, would you look at the time! It looks like this is my cue to go!” Mr. Smiles pulls out a suitcase from his sleeve and is about to jump out the window. “Wait! You can leave before I can get your autograph!” Kris scrambles to pick up his math worksheet that he drew Mr. Smiles on. As he hands it to him, he smiles wider, but this time it feels more genuine as he writes down his autograph. “Don’t ever forget kid, always keep your head up high and smile wide! Hah!” He takes a leap out the window, and Kris never saw A Mr. Smiles episode on air again.
